Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. That date might sound far away, but it will come around quickly – and it’s important to understand what it means and what you should do next.
What does “end of support” mean?
When Windows 10 support ends, Microsoft will stop providing updates. That means:
- No more security updates to keep your computer safe from new viruses and hackers
- No more bug fixes for problems in the system
- No more technical support from Microsoft
Your computer will still work after October 2025, but without updates it will gradually become less secure and some apps may eventually stop working properly.
Which versions are affected?
All editions of Windows 10 – including Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education – will reach end of support on October 14, 2025.
The version many people are using now, Windows 10 version 22H2, is the last ever version of Windows 10.
What should you do?
1. Check if your PC can run Windows 11
Most modern computers can upgrade, but not all. The easiest way to check is to use Microsoft’s free tool:
- Download the PC Health Check app from Microsoft’s website
- Run it, and it will tell you if your computer is compatible with Windows 11
If it is, you can upgrade for free.
2. Back up your files
Before making any big changes, make sure you have your documents, photos, and important files saved – either on an external drive or in cloud storage like OneDrive or Google Drive.
3. Plan your next steps
- If your PC is compatible, upgrade to Windows 11 before October 2025.
- If it’s not compatible, you may need to consider moving to a new or refurbished computer that already supports Windows 11.
Why you shouldn’t ignore this
Sticking with Windows 10 after October 2025 means:
- Your PC won’t get security fixes – making it easier for hackers and viruses to cause damage.
- Over time, apps and programs may stop working properly on an unsupported system.
- New devices and accessories may not work with an outdated system.
